I'm on-call for work again. It really seems like this past couple of weeks, the census in the hospital is lower compared to the months of december through march. Hmm..I wonder why. Moms are not having that many babies around this time.
When I first started working in november til around march, it was always busy in our OB unit and was usually overloaded with mom/baby couplets at those times. Starting april, we started to slow down until the present time. *knock on wood though, I don't want to jinx it!** But I noticed in many occasions that it's especially busy, as in crazy-busy when it is a full moon. I overheard my co-worker yesterday at work that it was crazy-busy shift last saturday just because it's "full moon". Then again my curiosity about this "full moon" thing spiked up again. It made me research for what this superstitious belief is all about...that labors and births are high when it is a full moon.
This is what I got from this website:
"While these expectant mothers visiting the clinic with their mistaken signs of labor are part of the reason why extra staff are needed, the major difference is found in the number of women whose amniotic sac — the water — breaks. Just as some women experience false labor pains, in cases where the water breaking marks the start of childbirth, full moon is the time when it’s most likely to happen...On checking this against a moon phase chart, I discovered that almost all had given birth on, or very close to, a full moon. The theory is that the moon’s gravitational pull effects the amniotic fluid in much the same way as it effects the water in the sea, rivers and even the water that’s otherwise found in our bodies."

Isn't it interesting that the gravitational pull can affect the amniotic fluid inside the mom's womb that similarly affects the vast body of water in the earth like the waters in the ocean? That's just amazing though there's no statistics or scientific explanation to prove this.

Spirit Gram
I was given another spirit-gram yesterday at work. The good thing about being a nurse is when someone appreciates your care. It is priceless and very rewarding especially when your given care is being recognized.
Aww..It means a lot to me. ![]()
“During a d/c phone call, a patient complimented you on the care you gave her." ![]()
Oh, also the Joint Commissions did the survey in our hospital 2 weeks ago. And according to their review, we did an excellent job in every categories, quality patient care, good end-of-shift report, and good time-out, etc. That's just WOW! And our nurse manager is throwing a barbeque to all of the staff this saturday, but boo I'm working that day!
Couple of months ago, we also received a very good score of 97% on "Patient Satisfaction" survey that we conduct after the patient gets discharged. It means that majority of our patients will most likely recommend us to other people and will most likely return to our hospital for their care. And part of that, the whole perinatal unit including the Labor and Delivery staff and Nursery staff and Obstetrics staff gathered up to take a photo and this was published in our local newspaper here.
And we have this displayed on the frame in the hallway. Just took a quick snapshot of it using my b-berry. ![]()

This made me freak-out last night!...
I was going to burn a cd, but apparently the cd did not register in my mac. It was unreadable and could not load. I tried to eject it but nothing happened. Tried couple of times, but it still won't eject it. Gosh darn, the cd was stuck!!! ![]()
I restarted my Mac hoping that it will finally eject it..but nope! It's almost impossible to manually eject a cd/dvd in MacBook Pro because it doesn't have an eject button. I tried to keep my cool and googled possible fix to this. And I came across this site. I took a gift card and followed what he said in his article:
"So I used a little trick, I inserted a small piece of thin battery pack cardboard just above the disc and twisted it (the cardboard) a little so the disk can’t spin when starting up. I turned the computer on and held down the trackpad button. I could hear the sound of the optical drive inside, not the spinning sound but rather sound of something moving ever so slightly. I heard it only two times and the third sound was a well known one - the offending DVD came out."
So I used a gift card and inserted it in the slot trying to stop the cd from spinning couple of times. Then I pressed the eject button. Then the stupid cd finally came out. Gosh darn!
Whew! Thanks for this article! Truly a lifesaver! Now my new macky is back to normal. Whew! Omg that was just scary. Sheez..

Never too late
I didn't get to record a song for Mother's day, but it's never too late to post it now, is it?
Here it is K, here's my post-Mother's day song.
It always gives me goosebumps singing this song. Very powerful lyrics.
Here's my version..Now I have to let my mom hear this when I get back home. hihi..
Wind beneath my wings
Ohhhh...
It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.
So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strain.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.
It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.
Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings..

First, OMG be careful with your Mac, it happened to my MacBook laptop. Do not use "fake" CD or DVD "it can read minds". I couldn't remove it so I had to send it to the Mac center, it was under warranty so I didn't pay. Did you apply for the Care Center in case it got wack? I think the trick is to hold the power button and the eject button for a second then release together. I don't know just my assumption. Buti na lang OKS na, gift card lang pala katapat.
"Moms are not having that many babies around this time." Hahahaha.
I do not know about that, but to the superstitious people, it suggest right. In HK, couples choose not to have more than 3 babies in their family. The flats here are small, HK is a tiny region, it's over populated here (isama mo pa kami). So I think it depends where we live. Sa Pinas kaya?
Congrats Diane, we are also celebrating Appreciation Week this week so the company is trying to "Give Back" to their staff.
Thanks for the beautiful song.
@K, i know now i have to be careful when inserting a cd in this computer. it's scary talaga. bagung-bago sisirain ko agad, omg.
Sa pinas, I don't think there's a limit. Di ba? Esp. poor people don't even know any family planning. Paramihan pa sila ng anak.
So what did they give you for the appreciation week? Kami we got free "ice cream" and "free bbq" because it's "nurses week". Yun lang, parang bitin nga eh. hehe..
You're welcome! :)
Congrats on the spirit gram babe. Much deserving. If there was a spirit gram for girlfriends i'd make sure you get one every week (or maybe be more).
That's kind of weird about how your CD wouldn't eject. Good to know though if mine ever does that. Wonder if that'll work with PC's though.
imy
So what did they give you for the appreciation week? Kami we got free "ice cream" and "free bbq" because it's "nurses week".The whole week, we have buffet. We also have the visiting day for the unprivileged. We have games, mga mugs ang gifts and of course there are balloons in the cafeteria. It's nice to prick them with a toothpick and we go "YEHEY"! It will end until this Friday.
@K, wow buffet ha! All you can eat! Haha..prick the balloons with toothpick, LOL! Tapos gulatin ang mga nakaupo sa cafeteria, hahaha..:D
congratulations on getting another spirit gram! =) good job!
too many superstitions about the full moon. like women tend to get lunatic during the full moon. haha! kaya cguro ako napa-emote nung weekend while listening to ur song... full moon ata nun! LOL.
gosh, i remember panicking too when a cd got stuck on my mac. as in mangiyak-ngiyak talaga ako. ginoogle ko din lang how to eject the disc. yan ang hirap sa slot loading drive.
nweis, i've been meaning to ask pala wat program ur using to record, edit and mix ur songs? i've been trying to figure out how to do it on my mac kaso im just too tamad. dun ko sa laptop ng brother ako nagrerecord but i dunno vista anymore (xp lng alam ko) kaya hindi ko na alam paano. hehe =)
@EyMi, thanks!
how did you manage to take the cd out? did you the use the "credit card" method too? yeah that was scary my goodness..
i use Protools to record and arrange/mix songs. (click here for the related entry http://msdianeg.blogspot.com/2009/03/my-stress-free-hiding-place.html) I have a mini recording studio and i use a condenser mic. it's kind of complicated. but when i was using a windows xp program, i was using Live Ableton software, okay rin yun.
I think sa Mac it was already made with GarageBand so try that one. It's much simpler, all you need to get is a good mic. :)
@Ghee, you're funny! you made me laugh with multo and tikbalang thing, etc. haha..oo nga noh sana cash na lang pero i doubt that will ever happen!
yup, wind beneath my wings is not specifically for moms. you can dedicate it to someone who has a special contribution in your life. :)
Hi D!
Just a question, when you said "on-call" does that really mean that the hospital will call you before hand and tell you not to go to work? Why is that? What if patients suddenly poured in?
Oh my goodness. Pati ba naman amniotic fluid napu-pull ng Full moon? I know about the seas and other bodies of water, kaya `nga may high tide eh! Pero fluid inside the mom's womb? That could be scary. Eh di may contractions din yun? Yaiks!
That's the nice thing about your work, you're being appreciated.
I saw you agad du'n sa framed picture ;)
Good thing nothing bad happened on your MACBook. Ang mahal pa naman niyan! Hehehe!
@Ate Vayie, "on-call" means "stand-by". I will literally wait for the call to come-in if i need to. ganito kasi yan, may nurse:patient ratio, and to us it's 1:4 (mom/baby couplets). If for example the patient census is low, then our unit will not need 8 nurses scheduled so they will have to call people off (this is when they will give you a day-off) or put nurses on-call. It's so unpredictable in our unit, so if i'm on-call they will call me back if more patients delivered a baby or had c-section and they need another nurse. i guess it goes like this in most of the hospitals. it's their way of cutting cost as well. mas mabuti na kesa mag-lay-off sila di ba?
Yup that's why more women deliver is because they are having contractions. Most of it also is Braxton-Hicks contractions meaning "false labor". Kaya yung iba akala nila time na pero hindi pa pala.
@Ate Vayie, PS: and if they put me on-call they have to let me know 2 hours before my shift. Kaya minsan nakabihis na ako, tapos sasabihin nila i'm gonna call you off or put you on-call. Minsan nakakainis, pero okay na rin. hehe...
Isn't that amazing? I've never heard of that theory or belief before! If some sort of gravity in the moon influences some fluids in the womb, then that is pure mystery!
good job on getting that appreciation letter. you deserve it!
sweetie, your mom has to listen to your song! never too late for that. ;)
@Kat,yup and most of my coworkers believe it too. Crazy huh?
I still dont know if i should let her listen to it. She's a "critique".
